New to Crypto and curious which online (desktop) wallet to use to buy and sell coins/tokens?

I’m not even sure if what I wrote makes sense. Correct me if I’m wrong but these various desktop/mobile wallets are similar if not exactly the same as an online brokerage accounts where one trades stocks…?
